Satan Takes a Holiday, “Aliens” Record Review in The Pit!
Satan Takes a Holiday, don’t let the name fool you, this is a Swedish indie, garage, glam inspired rock band that is a mix of 60’s Garage and 70’s Groove that is regarded as one of the best live bands in their homeland of Sweden. Like a bat shot straight out of hell or a kick in the gut when you’re already down – addictive, in-your-face, rough, tough, ironic and dead serious, all at once – Satan Takes a Holiday grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go until you’re gasping for air.
“Aliens”, with a release date of February 24th, 2017, is the fourth record by the Stockholm rockers and the first one that is gaining international attention. Satan Takes a Holiday has taken inspiration from The Hives, The White Stripes and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This power trio grinds out hard hitting songs that get your attention, keep it, and then let go, only to have the steps repeated throughout the record. They songs are the best 3 minutes of your life…every time. While the songs on “Aliens” are to the point, they are recognizable and I found myself singing along with most of them during the course of listening to them. Listen hard enough I heard tones of early Red Fang and Eagles of Death Metal.
The record starts out of the gate with “Good Cop, Bad Cop” and journeys through anger, social anxiety, family tragedy, and eventually a stirring version of “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road” by the Beatles. New and old fans of the band will get their fill of Satan Takes a Holiday’s vintage mix of cockiness, self-deprecation and sarcasm. As for the band’s use of sarcasm, vocalist Fred Burman says, “It has just always been part of our way of communicating lyrically, I think. It comes naturally.”
I also had the pleasure of chatting with Fred Burman, vocalist of Satan Takes a Holiday, and learned much more about the band, which included a sweet gig with one my favorite bands of all time.
